Back home  /  News  /  Latest News  /  Polytunnel Project

Sandymoor Parish Council have agreed to fund the purchase and construction of a greenhouse/polytunnel at Hazlehurst Independent Living centre on Acton's Wood Lane.

The aim is to facilitate joint working between students at Sandymoor Ormiston Academy and residents, with residents imparting skills and knowledge to the students and the latter both learning new skills and bringing their own knowledge and experience to any tasks.

The polytunnel will be fully accessible so that all residents who wish to can participate.

Cllr Steve Mahon, Chair of the Parish Council, said "We're really pleased this is finally coming to fruition. We've been discussing it for a while, and we really hope it provides some great relaxation and rewards for the residents and some first-class learning opportunities for the students."

Rose Armstrong, Independent Living Manager at Hazlehurst said, "This is an ideal opportunity to engage with the young people from Sandymoor Ormiston Academy and welcome them to Hazlehurst to participate in multi-generational activities to benefit the community as a whole".

Linsey Hand, Principal at the Academy said 'We are delighted to be part of this exciting new social action project, working alongside residents from Hazlehurst to develop and maintain a community polytunnel garden. This supports the school's broader commitment to social action, encouraging young people to make a positive impact both in and beyond the classroom.
This intergenerational gardening initiative is a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in meaningful, hands-on work that supports local sustainability and strengthens community ties.
